Raven Star
There is an oldNorthwest Coast legend of Raven, and how he stole the sun, moon and finally, the stars from a greedy old chief. He then placed them in the sky for all the people and animals. Since Raven is ever so smart and a bit sneaky, I placed him curled up in a ball, trying to look inconspicuous, while nonchalantly holding a star in his beak, waiting for just the right moment to escape to the sky, holding his prize. Available in buff (shown above) or cream or white.
Eagle Flower
I once visited British Columbia in the springtime. While sitting on a hillside overlooking the ocean, two eagles riding on an updraft, flew so close to me that I could clearly see them staring at me. The image of being surrounded by eagles was very strong. This print commemorates that vision of a circle of eagles in springtime, staring into my very being. Available in cream,or buff.
Three Wolves
This image first appeared as an illustration on a drum. I was intrigued with the concept of forcing wolves into a circular shape. Wolves were traditionally associated with the spirit of the successful hunter and are considered a clan or family emblem. Supernaturally, wolves are related to the orcas or killer whales. Wolves are represented by large nostrils, long snout, big teeth and a curled tail. To enhance the "wolfness" of the image, I reproduced the wolf inside the two clawed paws, thus completing the circle. Available on cream.
Goose in the Moon
Light from the full moon has always played tricks with me visually, by making things appear to be what they are not. I once camped near a large lake with the full moon rising. Geese that were on the water were disturbed and flew across the face of the moon. I commemorated the moment by depicting a stylized goose and full moon. The goose is intertwined with the moon so as to appear to be swallowed by it. The moon is represented by the blue crescent and by the non-traditional human profile attempting to swallow the goose. Available in buff, or cream.
Spirit Bird
Along the shores of the Northwest Coast, there is a beautiful black feathered bird known as an Oystercatcher. This red-eyed bird is both mystical and comical in his movements and actions. Indigenous artists occasionally depicted the Oystercatcher on rattles or spoon handles. Perhaps the habitat and behavior of this bird gave it mystical properties as it lived between three worlds - that of land, air, and sea.
Eagle Spirit
I had a close friend who was deeply troubled. I wanted to give him something to help him take heart. Eagles have always represented freedom, strength, and a closeness to the Creator. So I chose the Eagle. This Eagle Spirit is circular to symbolize that there is no beginning and no end to our ability to be free, strong, and close to our Creator. Lastly, inside this Eagle Spirit is ourselves, struggling to be the free and powerful spirit.
