My drums are
made in a traditional manner. I use Alaskan yellow cedar for the frames.
The wood pieces are hand cut and glued together without the use of metal
fasteners.
This glue is high quality waterproof glue.

The drum heads
are either buffalo or elk rawhide. Each fall I gather raw skins from
hunters. I clean and soak the skins in pure water until the hair begins
to slip. I then scrape the hair and flesh until the hides are completely
clean. The hides are then laced to a frame and dried.
I cut the drum
head and lacing prior to stretching, soaking it for at least 24 hours.
Once completed the drum is left to dry slowly. A carved hardwood drumstick
is included with each drum.

PAINTED DRUMS
I use waterproof inks and
generally stay with colors traditional to Northwest
Coast art. I am intrigued by the abstract complexity of the traditional
Northwest Coast native art, and by how the traditional shapes
are compressed or stretched to fit a given space while maintaining
the integrity of the design.
I use technical drafting
pens, and waterproof, lightfast, indelible ink to DRAW BY
HAND, each design.
These drums are not screen printed, and each drum piece is unique.
Allow 2 weeks for delivery.
I also offer
designs in other styles.
I am a self-taught
artist and craftsperson. All the drawings are my original designs in
the Northwest Coast tradition.
In addition
to drums, I am also offering limited edition serigraphs (screen prints)
of my original designs in the Northwest Coast native art tradition.
To place a custom
order, or to order serigraphs, you can call or visit my home studio.

Turtle
Bear Drums
Turtle-Bear: In
this design I chose to represent human kind's interaction with
our
environment and symbolize our role as protectors of the Earth.
I represent the Earth as the Turtle, hard shelled, and alive
within. Using the device of split-imagery, Turtle forms a circle
suggesting the endless cycle of seasons and life, through time.
Superimposed upon Turtle is Bear. In traditional Northwest Coast
art, Bear represents the supernatural, the change from animal
to human, and the guardians of spirit. This Bear suggests humanity's
role of protector of the Earth, yet is part of the Earth. Bear's
tongue denotes power and the ability to transform that power
into action. Together, Turtle-Bear reminds me of our relationship
with the Earth, and our ability to make changes for the good
of all.
